The series comprises original historical material created by members of the Powell, Dewar, and inter-married families, and kept or accumulated by Robert Powell. It includes correspondence, scrapbooks, memoirs, legal documents, printed material, photographs, works of art, diplomas, certificates, and medals. Prominent early Canadian families are represented in this series including the Torrance family of Montreal, the Proudfoots, Hurds, Cassels, Ridouts, the Jarvis family, the Merritts, and the Powells of Toronto and Ottawa, all of whom were influential in Upper or Lower Canada. The Torrance family letters dating from the mid-nineteenth century are of particular importance. Correspondence between Elizabeth Torrance and her sons, James and Andrew, ranges from updates on their education and experiences in Britain to motherly advice concerning religion and devotion to God. The correspondence between Elizabeth's husband John Andrew Torrance and Daniel Torrance discusses the status of the family's business, the Montreal and Quebec Steamboat Company, with regards to supplies, shipping, and the building of new ships. There is also significant material from the Powell family line, including interesting items like Montagu Powell's King 's Counsel certificate from 1928 and Robert Henry Wynyard Powell's Doctor of Medicine diploma from McGill University in 1877.

The series holds two medals struck to commemorate the 50th wedding anniversaries of William Dummer Powell and Anne Murray in 1825 and Grant Powell and Elizabeth Mary Hurd in 1896. The medals are made of bronze and silver, respectively. There are two portraits in brown wash which date to 1857 and depict Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Mary Cassels. There is also a watercolour portrait miniature on ivory of an officer in the Guards ca. 1815. Another small watercolour on paper reputedly depicts Samuel Proudfoot Hurd, ca. 1820, a Powell family ancestor. (Hurd served in the Guards in 1814-1815 and may have been the subject of the miniature too). Four Powell family wax seals and a drawing of Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa by E. G. May complete this series.
