Interview of "Frank Lloyd" (not his real name), age 80, who was born in Lancashire in 1894 and came to Canada in 1913. He talks about: his childhood; poverty in England when he was growing up there; wanting to come to Canada for the "adventure"; advertising by the Canadian Pacific Railway and other organizations to encourage immigration to Canada; his first impressions of Toronto; unemployment in Toronto; English immigrants in Toronto helping one another; unskilled labour; doing piece work; various jobs he had; lack of job security because of the fluctuations of the business cycle; the lack of respect by manufacturers for their workers; the profit motive; a time and motion study in the workplace; dissatisfaction among the workers; time and motion studies often being detrimental to the workers; the need for unions; time and motion studies tested in the United States but applied to the Canadian workplace even though Canadian machinery was inferior to American machinery; making electrical appliances; working conditions in the 1930s; working as a commercial fisherman when the First World War broke out; the better working conditions of commercial fishermen; discrimination against immigrants; meeting a war buddy in England much later; strikes; the feeling of confidence when the First World War broke out because Britain had the world’s most powerful navy; his enlistment; the large percentage of British immigrants who enlisted; the feeling that the men who enlisted early were on a "picnic" and got a free ticket to England; service as a signaler in the artillery; army training; army discipline; feelings about his officers; being refused a commission; the pursuit of power; the attitude of officers; the killer instinct some people; training soldiers to make then into killers; his feeling that it was a shocking thing to kill people; inciting soldiers to kill, by means of rumors of atrocities and practicing with dummies; recollections of a Zombie in the hospital; attitudes toward conscripts; adjustment to civilian life after the war; assistance to veterans to help them find jobs; getting a job in a machine shop; poor working conditions in the shop; job insecurity; employees getting fired for smoking; his marriage; the importance of luck in life; wages and the cost of living.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.~6. On the release form for the sound recording, the interviewee stipulated that he remain anonymous, so this interview is under the fake name of "Frank Lloyd" which the authors of the book gave to him when citing his comments in the book.
