GREENPEACE : MAKING A STAND is a TV documentary based on a book by Vancouver journalist Rex Weyler. It chronicles the early years of Greenpeace, one of the oldest environmental organizations, through dramatic archival footage and still photographs obtained from a variety of sources; through talking heads (including the co-founders of Greenpeace) who tell stories and anecdotes from the period; and through music that vividly depicts that exceptional era. The documentary also explores the question of what inspires people to risk their own lives for our planet. Featured footage shows activists sailing a ship into a nuclear test zone, getting between a pod of whales and explosive harpoon, and blocking bulldozers destroying a forest. Fastforward thirty five-years, bringing this story to the present, the documentary shows the founding members of the organization interact with young activists working on a potentially dangerous campaign in Argentina. Weyler is joined by John Watterberg, an energetic young campaigner from New York. The two of them join the Greenpeace Jaguars, a courageous wing of Argentine activists who ride high-power dirt-bikes into the forest of Argentina to stop the bulldozers in their destructive action. One of these forests is homeland of the indigenous Wichi people. As a result of the awareness that Greenpace and the documentary brought to the Wichi people's plight, on August 15, 2006, the Argentine president officially gave the title deed for the Pizzaro Reserve to the Wichi natives. This is a documentary that celebrates the desire to continue the good fight on new (environmental) battle grounds. <27mn 10s>
