Interview of Newton S. Joynt of North York, who was born in Sunderland, Ontario in 1896. He talks about: street fights; seeing his first automobile in 1908 wages in 1910; the cost of produce back then; his older brothers volunteering for military service in the First World War; his going over later; landing in Liverpool; military training in Britain but not getting to fight; his brothers not being well when they got out of the army and got back to Canada; the poor treatment they received when they got out of the military, because they did not get enough financial assistance given the condition they were in; a brother who was somewhat imbalanced after the war due to a nervous condition; having trouble saving enough money to buy a house; soldiers getting land after the Second World War; how people who volunteered for military service in the First World War did not understand what they were getting into; how as the war went on people understood better; draftees being good fighters; the young and healthy conscripts as compared to the older volunteers; his 48-year career for the railway; his job as station agent at Agincourt for Canadian National Railways; baseball; sleigh rides; people getting food from gardens, hens and cows; farm crops; the beauty of England; taking 11 days and 19 hours to cross the ocean; the hospitality of people in England, except for those near the camps, who “soaked them for everything”; soldiers damaging the town of Whitley after the war, with the exception of the Salvation Army; London, England as one of the greatest towns for a soldier; two officers who got killed in 1918; being stationed in England; soldiers picking up girls; going to plays such as The Man From Toronto; gambling in camp; training in marching, bomb throwing, rifle use, signalling, telegraph code, and bayonet use; a story about defying an officer to get out of camp; the treatment of soldiers by officers; riding horses for the artillery; army food; how some people near the camps got sick of the soldiers; missing out on service in France because the war ended; staying in England for two years after the war; getting his old job back when he got back to Canada; playing baseball in England; the influenza epidemic in England in 1918; the sharp increase in prices when he got back to Canada; his army pay; how wages did not keep pace with prices increases after the war; working at Whitby Junction for 15 years; working conditions on the railway after the war; the first railway strike, in 1925; feelings of guilt over not volunteering; his brother’s capture by the Germans; trade competition between Germany and England as the cause of the war; the German people and the country of Germany; the Russian revolution; living conditions under communism; Canadian troops sent to Vladivostock; wartime songs and other recreational activities such as telling stories, playing some cards, and playing baseball.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
