Interview of Douglas Murray of Toronto, age 82, who was born in Scotland in 1892 and came to Canada in 1910. He talks about: his father; his education; moving to Canada; selling ice cream at Eaton’s when he came to Canada; his working conditions and salary; later work for the Salvation Army and Tamblyn’s; going to the Young Men’s Christian Association for recreation; reading books; his marriage after the war; the start of the First World War; joining the army shortly after; fighting out of loyalty to Great Britain; his view that it was his duty to enlist; the Battle of Ypres; training in the cavalry; joining the infantry when he got to England; going into the trenches 9 months after he joined; taking orders at the front line; deserters getting shot; looser discipline in the Canadian army than in the British and Germany armies; his participation in every major battle in France; the capture of Mons on Armistice morning; the creeping barrage; the Second Battle of Ypres; the first gas attack; how the Canadians retaliated for the gas attack; Passchendaele; Vimy Ridge; the Fourth Canadian Mounted Rifles; his return to Canada after the war; regiment originals who returned; his army discharge; going to watchmaking school when he returned; going to work for the Goodyear Tire Company; the high percentage of men from Great Britain in the Canadian Army; comments on the Vietnam War; increases in prices and wages; piecework at Goodyear; the increase in automation; being able to readjust to civilian life with no problems; unions; the Russian revolution; getting married after the war; courses provided for veterans; working at Sunnybrook Hospital for 14 years after World War Two; reinforcements for regiments; and Eaton’s department store paying its employees when they were away fighting the war.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
