Interview of Wilfred Saul, who was born in Winnipeg in 1901. His family moved to Toronto in 1903. His father was a book editor for W.J. Gage. In 1917, Wilfred Saul graduated from high school and went to work as a salesman for W.J. Gage. He talks about: his Toronto neighbourhood;, going to church with his family; his education; the feeling of excitement when the First World War broke out, a feeling that lasted until the casualty lists started coming out; being too young to enlist; civilians contributing to the war effort; boys such as himself getting out of school to help out on farms; his farm chores; farm life; the responsibilities of the farmer’s wife; Canadian involvement in the war taken for granted; no discrimination against German Canadians; attending the University of Toronto School and training school for teachers; farmerettes working around Grimsby and the Niagara Peninsula, picking fruit; the family servants and housework done by his sisters; his older sister’s wartime work for a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD); working a publishing company in 1918; working conditions; unions; childhood games such as fox and hound; not being able to go to university because he failed French, disappointing his parents who both were university graduates; his mother as one of the founders of the university women’s club and a member of the class of 1895; the lack of career opportunities for female university graduates; his mother’s interest in day nurseries; restrictions on the lives of women; women’s suffrage; support for conscription; attitudes about war; formalities breaking down during the war; dating older girls when soldiers were overseas but when the soldiers returned the girls would not have anything to do with him; and his medal awarded for being a “Canada food boy” and “soldier of the soil” when he did farm work during the war.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
