Interview of Mrs. Dorothy E. Saul, who was born in Sault Ste. Marie in 1902. Her father was one of three dentists in Sault Ste. Marie. She talks about: her early schooling in Sault Ste. Marie; her graduation from the University of Toronto in 1923; going on picnics in Sault Ste. Marie; the family cottage there; reading the newspaper during the First World War; knitting caps and scarves in khaki wool; the excitement of the time; her brother serving in the war; the hysteria when the war ended; food shortages; her mother using rice flour due to flour shortages; a man from Sault Ste. Marie who was the first Canadian wounded in France; men going overseas with insufficient training; wartime propaganda and melodrama, with the need to save “poor little Belgium” as an example; patriotism for the British Empire; little books for school children about the course of the war; children being expected to know maps of France and Belgium; Italian immigrants in Sault Ste. Marie; the Italians working in the Algoma Steel Corporation steel plant; Italians not mingling with other residents; the small French community in Sault Ste. Marie; the Anglo-Saxon tone of Sault Ste. Marie at that time; the different ethnic communities not mixing with the others; a large Indian reservation near Sault Ste. Marie; Anglican and Catholic schools for Indians; the history of the establishment of the steel mill and paper mill in Sault Ste. Marie, who did not share the anti-war attitudes of people in Quebec; Indian women selling baskets and picking wild strawberries; Indian men fishing and hunting; an Indian man who worked at their family cottage; delivering ice for the ice-box before the 1920s, when they were replaced by refrigerators; horses used commercially for a long time before cars came in; her father’s dentistry practice; her parents unhappy that her brother enlisted; churches and schools closed in the fall of 1918 because of the influenza epidemic; her brother’s return from the war; the initial attitude toward the war that it was a big adventure; realizing later that people were manipulated into supporting the war; learning the causes of the war in school but finding out about different causes later; anti-German sentiment; two steelworkers in Sault Ste. Marie identified as spies; people’s refusal to buy German-made goods; augmenting the output of the steel plant for armaments; women getting the vote; Agnes Macphail running for office in the 1920s; Prohibition, rum-running in Sault Ste. Marie and her father’s support for temperance; family life; picnics; recreational activities enjoyed by teenagers, such as playing tennis, swimming and skating to music, going to dances; the family’s religious observances; an organization Sault Ste. 1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
