The collection consists of records concerning Major D. L. McKeand and it documents the Eastern Arctic Patrol mail and the R.M.S. Nascopie.

It includes 4 postal covers carried by air mail and/or by the R.M.S. Nascopie bearing various postmarks from Aklavik, Coppermine, Craig Arbour, Fort Ross, Lake Harbour, Ivigtut and Edmonton dated 1929, 1938 to 1940. Two first covers, certified, of the North West Passage route are signed by Thos F. Smellie, captain of the R.M.S. Nascopie, D.L. McKeand, Superintendant of the Eastern Arctic Patrol, F.R.E. Sparks, postmaster on the Nascopie, H. Brown, pilot of the Mackenzie Airways and others.

It also includes official correspondence of 1940 from D.L. Mckeand, Department of Mines and Resources (file 8817) to Mr. Gibson relating the development of the Eastern Arctic mail services and two press clippings (Montreal Star, 1940, on mail services and the Ottawa Citizen, 1966, on the death of Major McKeand).

Finally, the collection includes two bronze medals to commemorate the visit of the King George VI and the Queen Elizabeth in Canada in 1939 which were distributed to Canadian school children.
