On February 14, 1981 over 1000 women gathered in Ottawa to demand that women's equality be written into the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The conference was organized by the Ad Hoc Committee of Canadian Women and the Constitution and was attended by women and activists from across the country. Through their work at this conference, they changed Canadian history by ensuring stronger equality sections of the newly patriated Canadian Constitution's Charter of Rights and Freedoms (sections 15 and 28).

Twenty-five years later, on February 14 2006, in the same room on Parliament Hill, many of the original women returned to join parliamentarians, grassroots leaders, academics, students and activists from Canada and abroad for the two-day Forum on Women's Activism in Constitutional and Democratic Reform that engaged in celebratory retrospection and produced forward-looking strategies in a global context for women's equality rights.
