Interview of Mrs. Margaret Armstrong, age 82, of Toronto. She was born in Scarborough in 1892 and her occupation was housewife. She talks about: her family background; her marriage in 1910; her husband’s not being called to military service in the First World War; his work as a contractor; knitting for the war effort; the widespread opinion at first that the war would not last long; a cousin who had to have his leg amputated during the war; soldiers not realizing at first how gruesome war really was; people who enlisted just to get work; injured veterans who were hospitalized until they died; a war veteran who came back paralysed and then died; visiting returned soldiers in the hospital; her husband not being harassed even though he did not join the army, and avoiding harassment probably because he worked in farm country where the boys were needed to do agricultural work; the farmerettes, who used to dress like boys; animosity toward Germans; reading newspapers to keep up with the news; women working in factories; two friends who worked in factories; her father’s view that it wasn’t right for young boys to have to go to fight with a bunch of “heathens”; her move to Toronto with her husband; her husband’s death in the influenza epidemic at age 38; being widowed with four children; bringing up her children herself; her loneliness; putting bodies of influenza victims in trenches because there were so many deaths there was no time to bury them properly; not being able to get a doctor or a nurse; her fear that she was going to die and leave her children; her doctor not even sending her a bill; how the war era was a very lonely time for women; and national pride at that time.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
