Interview of Mrs. Sophie Goldenthal of Toronto, age 78, who was born in Romania. She talks about: moving from Romania to live with relatives in Montreal when she was age 11; going to work immediately even though she was too young to work legally; her marriage to a man who worked as a presser in the garment industry; inflation and other hardships during the First World War; fainting and being taken to hospital while she was pregnant because she was caught in a crowd of people who were climbing over one another to buy oranges during a sale at the Eaton’s department store; the black market and her avoidance of it because she did not want to get in trouble with the law; shoving the head of a particularly aggressive woman into a crate of eggs during a sale at Eaton’s because the woman was preventing others from getting to the eggs; her husband’s work making uniforms in a garment factory because he was too old to enlist; the difficulty families with children had in finding living accommodations; people working at Tip Top Tailors; her husband’s union activities; going to the St. Lawrence Market to get eggs, which were cheaper if you collected them yourself from the chicken coop; the generally cheaper goods bought from farmers at the market; labour unrest and unemployment; unions gaining strength; a strike at Tip Top; men picketing the station to stop the arrival of scab labour; efforts by the unions to make things better for the workers; the returned soldiers, who got their old jobs back after the war; Tip Top continuing to make uniforms after the war; her husband working on a piece work basis; the union’s opposition to making workers do piece work; street celebrations after the war; workers taking the day off for the celebrations; the anguish of the people who lost relatives during the war; disabled soldiers returning; parades for returned soldiers; her leaving the workforce after she got married; her view that it was “mostly a man’s world”; people getting rich during the war through profiteering and the black market; thinking that the suffragettes were comical but that they did accomplish a lot; liking to read newspapers and detective stories; and being in a march on November 11 to the synagogue and finding themselves marching to a Salvation Army Band playing “Onward Christian Soldiers”.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5.
