An interview with Lefa McLarty of Toronto, age 87, who was born in Toronto in 1886. She talks about: her family background; summer holidays; her mother taking over a grocery store when her father died; her own job working at Eclipse Whitewear, a clothing factory, while her mother worked in the store; operating different machines in the factory; her salary; meeting her husband at a skating rink; her marriage in 1910; her husband’s work as a carpenter and at Woolworth’s store; her husband not being accepted for military service because he had a problem with his ankle; poor wages; financial hardship at the start of the war because she was not working and her husband was unable to work because of health problems; doing clothing factory piecework at home; recreational activities at Toronto Island and going on Sunday School picnics; going to High Park; skating and dances; her husband’s job and wages; immigrants; fear of the Russian Revolution; fear that the war would come to Canada; not knowing much about trade unions; the Foresters club; fashions; the cost of living; enjoying gramophone music; cars; going to see Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin in the movies; going to Shea’s to see plays with her friends; and her childhood dream to become a dressmaker.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
