Interview of First World War veteran Alfred Rose of Toronto, age 77, who was born in London, England in 1897. He talks about: his parents’ careers; his family’s immigration to Canada; finding work in Canada; moving to Toronto in 1914; getting a job at the Dunlop tire factory; enlisting in 1915 because he felt that he had to enlist; joining the 95th Battalion; service in France until the end of the war; his return to Canada; rejoining Dunlop; his marriage; working conditions and salary; working for Dunlop until 1929; his schooling; his sense that the move to Canada was that an adventure and that he thought Canada was going to be a wilderness; the journey to Canada; settling in Trenton, Ontario; factory work; various jobs he had; working at the Dunlop factory; recreational activities in Trenton, such as going to the Nickel Show where his mother played the piano; girlfriends; his mother’s opposition to his enlistment; not sharing the anti-German sentiment of the time; shrapnel wounds; a friend who became unhinged; the relationship between officers and the men; military discipline; the British army as more formal than the Canadian army; a man who deserted; soldiers who experienced mental stress; his first Christmas in the army; drinking and smoking; going to lectures warning soldiers about venereal disease; prostitution; postwar morality; the adjustment to civilian life after the war and how the church helped him to return to pre-war norms; the difficulty of maintaining religious faith during the war; a man who found religious faith during a raid; conscription and attitudes towards conscripts; life in the trenches; his first sight of a corpse; billets; going back home to Toronto; the new Dunlop factory and its new equipment; having to pay for a funeral by installments; buying a car; his wife’s being a Dr. Barnardo girl and working in a munitions factory; how most of people at Dunlop were too afraid to join a union; automobile trips; postwar life; the 1920s; and his view that people “just came back and started to live again”.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.~6. Date of interview is given on list in collection file as 1974-07-30 but 1974-07-31 on the deposit agreement and publication agreement.
