Interview of Mrs. I. Jarvis of Toronto, age 89, who was born in 1885 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She talks about: her childhood in Newfoundland; getting help with the housework from outport girls; the upper class and the poor in Newfoundland; her father’s career as a lawyer, Supreme Court judge and Premier of Newfoundland; class divisions in St. John’s, Newfoundland; her Church of England background; industry in St. John’s; fishing and canning factories; her father getting a knighthood for his work on the French Shore Question; games she played as a child; the British Navy based in St. John’s in the summer to look after fishing rights; reading newspapers; political views; denominational schools; examinations by the Council of Higher Education (CHE) held in England and marked by English professors; competition between schools; studying at the Royal College of Music in England; the fire that destroyed the Anglican Cathedral in St. John’s; attending an all-girls’ school in St. John’s; the practice for Newfoundland girls in her social class to go to England to finish their education; “coming out” after she got back from England; attending parties to introduce her to society; always being “able to fill her program” at dances; playing bridge and singing; always being chaperoned; new fashions arriving from England by steamer and going on display in shops in St. John’s; her marriage in 1909 and moving to Toronto; her husband’s job with the Bank of Montreal; her husband leaving the bank and buying a farm; Indians picking produce at harvest time; National Service girls, also called farmerettes, coming to pick the produce during the First World War because the Indian men were in the army; housing the girls on the farm during the harvest; paying the girls 2 cents per box although the Indians only got paid 1 cent a box; the farmerettes playing cards during the evenings; getting maids to help out; her focus on looking after her children during the First World War; more distinct memories of the Second World War; farm neighbours; reading the newspapers; her husband’s regret that he could not get into the war because he had only one eye; sugar rationing; bitterness against the Germans; opposition to conscription in Quebec; people hanging up flags when the war was over; the birth of her first child in 1913; selling the farm in 1921 and going into the tea business; founding the Himalayan Tea House; living at Spadina and St. Clair for 30 years after leaving the farm; her support for giving women the right to vote; women not being very interested in politics, although the war made them more interested; patriotism in her family; overseas wartime service by her brothers; her greater interest in the Second World War because her daughter was one of the first women to enlist in the WRENS; her brother’s enlistment in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and his suffering a serious arm injury before he reached the front; and pride in her brother for joining the army.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
