Interview of Mrs. Irene Vogt of Toronto, who was born in Waterloo, Ontario in 1908 to a father whose family came from Pennsylvania and a mother who was born in Germany and came to Canada at age 8. Her father was a cast iron moulder with the Waterloo Manufacturing Company. She talks about: living near the Mennonite community; the family’s religious affiliation; life in Waterloo and Kitchener; reading the Daily Record newspaper; getting influenza during the war; a Kindergarten teacher knitting socks for soldiers; rationing; growing food in a garden; raising chickens and rabbits; rationing; attitudes to Germans when the war broke out; German church services and German language instruction halted when war broke out; Mennonites; her mother being too busy with her family to do volunteer work during the war; going to the Ladies’ Aid and to picnics in the park; coal rationing; changing the name of Berlin, Ontario to Kitchener; difficult conditions for German people in Kitchener; the fear that German people were spies; her grandmother checked on to see if anyone in her household was writing to anyone in Germany; employment; women in the work force, mostly single women; factory work; working conditions; Mennonites at work on farms but not in factories; helping out her family; her family’s support for temperance; food such as apples and sugar; buying turkey, geese and eggs at a market in Waterloo; and life in Waterloo as opposed to Kitchener.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
