Interview of Mrs. E. Brant, age 76, who was born in Toronto in 1898 to British-born parents. She talks about: growing up in Toronto; her father’s work as a 3rd engineer on passenger boats during the summer months and in the Dunlop nursery; her education; religion; going sleigh riding at Christie Pits, to the Canadian National Exhibition and to Toronto Island; moving from Toronto in 1906 because he father got a free homestead in Innisfail, Alberta; travelling by train to Alberta; the government advertising free land; life at Innisfail; living in a house with a sod roof; lots of bachelors out West; crops grown by her father; her father’s skill at gardening; neighbours; homestead lands and land owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway; ranchers and homesteaders; schooling in Innisfail; school activities such as a Christmas play; missionaries holding services in people’s houses; farm work; farm equipment; her mother’s work around the farm; selling grain, cream and eggs; getting newspapers and magazines on the farm; the development of the town of Elnora near the farm; the start of railway construction in the area in 1910; life in Elnora; French-speaking people in the area; the schools as the places where social events such as dances took place; helping her parents around the farm and in the house; doctors and midwives; the impact of World War One; enlistment in the 113th Highland Regiment, mostly by men of Scots background; the lack of talk about the war in rural communities; the lack of celebrations in Elnora on Armistice Day; veterans who moved to other parts of Canada instead of coming back to Elnora; an uncle who went to war even though he was in his 40s, lying about his age; patriotism around Elnora; military training camp around Calgary; some volunteer work by people in town; veterans joining the Legion; the lack of impact of the war on her life; the increase in the price of grain; life in the early 1920s; dances in people’s houses and at school; farmers’ organizations such as the United Farmers of Alberta; her father’s membership in the United Farmers of Alberta and the United Grain Growers; no need for the temperance movement in their community because people had to travel too far to get liquor; the fight for women’s suffrage; the lack of criticism of the government during the war years; the family’s farm house; neighbours of Polish, French, English and American backgrounds; her marriage in 1932 and move to Drumheller; taking a course at agriculture school from 1923 to 1927 about how to run a house and a farm; more on her father’s farming; knitting and sewing for the war effort; a prairie fire; ordering clothing from the Eaton’s catalogue; and her father working as an enumerator for the 1911 census.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
