An interview of Sarah C. Stuart of Toronto, age 80. She was born on a farm near Oak River, Manitoba in 1894. Her father was a farmer. She went to business college in Brandon, Manitoba in 1912, was a stenographer from 1912 to 1915 for the Safelock Fence Company in Brandon, then worked as a stenographer for International Harvester Company in Weyburn, Yorkton, Regina and Swift Current. She married in 1916. She talks about: her father’s farm; her brothers helping out on the farm; working conditions on the farm; her work on the farm during the war, driving the binder; her mother’s work washing, baking and ironing; the farm livestock; attending church and school; the first school in the neighbourhood in a neighbour’s front room; later attending a one-room school; travelling to school by horse and buggy in summer and a cutter in winter; more on farm chores; getting Grade 8 education; helping her mother at home, with the gardening, milking cows, laundry and running the separator; going to business college in Brandon; two of her brothers going overseas, one with British Army Transport and the other training troops; her job as a stenographer; her parents wanting her to stay on the farm as cheap labour; learning shorthand and typing at business college; her job in Brandon and Weyburn; meeting her husband in Weyburn; life in Yorkton, Regina and Swift Current, Saskatchewan; her husband’s job with International Harvester; collecting money from farmers who owed money on farm equipment; International Harvester sales of farm implements such as ploughs, binders and engines; playing golf; her marriage in 1916; a very bad drought in Saskatchewan; moving back to Manitoba; her husband’s military service in Canada; going back to work after her husband was conscripted; life in the 1920s, raising children; and her brothers’ return to farming after the war.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.
~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.
