Interview of Harold Crosby of Toronto, age 72, who was born in 1901 in Toronto. Subjects discussed include: his family; growing up in Toronto and on a farm near Markham; catching fish in the Don River; market gardeners north of Danforth; the streetcars up as far as Broadview and Danforth; slides for bobsleds and toboggans at Riverside Park; sliding at Brickyard Hill (now Pottery Road); life in Markham; the family farm; crops; prices for produce at the St. Lawrence Market during World War One; farm shores; the trouble his father had getting farm help during the war because so many men were overseas; his hope that the war would last longer so that he could get into it; seeing men marching through Markham when he went to school; injuries suffered by the soldiers due to chlorine gas and mustard gas; working on the farm; threshing and cutting corn; training boys in war exercises at the Markham High School, using small rifles; his father leaving the farm and moving to Markham after the war; requiring the high school boys to be in the cadets during the war; training high school boys from Uxbridge, Scarborough, Stouffville, Unionville and Markham at Niagara Camp after the war because the government thought there was going to be another war; target practice and keeping the tents in order at the camp; the age limit for overseas military service; the enlistment of older high school boys; volunteers and conscripts; the Pennsylvania Dutch near Markham being able to avoid conscription occasionally because they were pacifists; conscription; enlistment among the many people of British descent living around Markham; military training of his friends at Camp Niagara and Camp Borden; working in his father's general store in Markham; postwar prosperity; ill-health among the veterans; the Spanish influenza sweeping the countryside near Markham; the sinking of the Empress of Ireland; reading the Toronto Globe newspaper; headlines on Armistice Day; the armistice celebration in Markham; returned soldiers; recreational activities such as the Markham Fair; country fairs; church activities; sports; rationing during the war; business in the 1920s; women knitting socks during the war; feelings about the Germans and the Pennsylvania Dutch; newspapers and magazines such as the Toronto Globe, the Markham Economist, The Markham Sun, the Stouffville Tribune, the Ladies' Home Journal, Saturday Night and the Saturday Evening Post; the reticence of the war veterans; temperance in country towns and prohibition.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.
~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
~6. The deposit agreement says that “no full name of the interviewee to be used on the tape”.
~7. The interviewee speaks very slowly.
