Interview of Howard E. Richmond of Toronto, who was born in Montreal approximately 75 years ago. He came to Canada with his parents circa 1900. Subjects discussed: growing up in Westmount, Outremont and Maisonneuve; his primary school education up to Grade 8, when he left to go to work; his job at the Imperial Tobacco Co., where he and the foreman were the only anglophones; packaging cigarettes there; his wages of eleven dollars a week; getting a job in 1915 at the Canadian Vickers Shipbuilding Yards, where he handed out tools in the supply room; long working hours; pressure to work overtime; the manufacture by Vickers of ships for the merchant marine during World War One; buying war bonds partly out of patriotism; his father and one brother going overseas as volunteers; his brother’s death overseas; his working life during and after the war; his move from Montreal to Toronto in 1920; the difficulty after the war to get a job unless you were a veteran; making $35 a week delivering telegrams in Toronto, including overtime pay; saving money to make a down payment on a house; working conditions at Imperial Tobacco; shipbuilders from Scotland working at the shipyard; mroe details of his work at the Canadian National Railways telegraph office in Toronto; leaving the telegraph office due to a strike; his father’s return from World War One service and job as a clerk with Canada Steamship Lines; his decision to go back to school, attending Danforth Technical School and Central Commerce; taking University of Toronto extension courses; his mother’s job as a saleslady at Ogilvy’s in Montreal while her husband was serving overseas; French people trying to avoid conscription in Montreal by hiding in tunnels in the shipyards; his support for conscription and feeling that French people should do their bit; hearing about conscription riots in Quebec City; reasons why some French people did not want to fight overseas; belonging to the Boy Scouts; animosity between French and English boys; his marriage in 1923; the celebration when the war was over; stories of boyhood activities, such as throwing snowballs at streetcars and going to Fletcher’s Field to see Santa Claus; workers at Imperial Tobacco stealing cigarettes; the closing down of the Vickers shipyard after the war; more about Imperial Tobacco and other places where he worked; the death of his brother as the major impact Richmond felt about the war; and his regret that he was too young to go overseas.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.~6. He was contacted for this project through Doris Marshall of the Development Education Centre.
