Interview of Charles Morton, who was born in Toronto in 1896. Subjects discussed include: his family; his father’s job as a plumber; stories told by his father about wealthy people he worked for, such as an Eaton daughter whose husband left her the day after the wedding; his family’s coming to Canada in 1875; the family home and garden; summer vacations on a farm; boyhood activities such as bicycle riding and reading; his university studies to be a mining engineer; enlisting in the First World War; his parents support for his decision; his decision to enlist "to join the crowd"; military discipline and how it came as a shock to him; the lack of knowledge among officers and non-commissioned officers; an officer unable to read a map; the uselessness of the training given in England; how discipline was looser once the soldiers got to France; receiving contradictory orders during the Battle of the Somme; Vimy Ridge; enjoying leave in Paris; looking forward to the "very friendly" girls while he was on leave; how there was little supervision of the soldiers on leave in Paris, but that conditions were more strict in Britain; the end of the war; convalescing in Britain; waiting to go back to Canada; buying civilian clothes and leaving his military clothing behind in the hotel because he was "through with that stuff"; the problems some soldiers experienced when trying to adjust to civilian life; government assistance for veterans; education assistance such as the Khaki Colleges; his postwar work on the Niagara Canal, with "Hydro" and for Inco; how union organizers would be fired; and resentment that many of the workers were foreigners.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.
~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
