An interview with George Good, age 95, of Belmont House, who was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, in 1885. He emigrated to the United States in 1909 and to Canada circa 1915. This is part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI. Subjects discussed include: his work for a textile factory in the U.S.; the invention of "Cartwright", a textile with the appearance of natural skins; how a relative encouraged him to emigrate from England when he was laid off; his journey by boat to America; arriving in New York and travelling to Norwick, Connecticut; having trouble finding work at first; his job as a clerk at a railway station; the U.S. rail system; shipping rubber by train; the declaration of war and his feelings about it at the time; his attitude to the military; his familiarity with military life because he lived near barracks when he was a boy; the effects of the war on his job; getting a job in the rubber industry during wartime; the effect of war on industry; playing soccer; belonging to a fraternal lodge; the effect on the workplace of the recommendations of a time-and-motion study expert from head office and the consequent strike; the foreign workers at the factory; how each group of foreign workers worked in a gang; workers asking for higher wages; splitting up the gangs to deflect wage demands; a dispute between Albanian and Italian workers; why he moved to Canada; the sinking of the Lusitania; U.S. preparations for war; his wife’s fear that he would be sent for military service; his decision to move to Toronto; staying with his wife’s brother; applying for work at the Parkdale Station; applying for work at a factory guarded by soldiers; offered a job to replace a conscripted soldier; work at the factory; lower wages than in the U.S.; the boss trying to get rid of older workers; working in a rubber factory; the use of rubber for ground sheets issued to soldiers; description of processing rubber and reclaiming old rubber; the renaming of Berlin, Ontario to Kitchener; the influenza epidemic in Toronto and how this affected workers and factory production; epsom salts and sitting in the sun as a treatment for influenza; hearing the declaration of the armistice while he was on his way to work; Toronto streets blocked by Armistice celebrations; children dancing on street cars; barricades on the windows of the Eaton’s department store; his going to work the next day but there still not being enough men at work to operate the factory; the return of the soldiers; free shoes at Eaton’s; soldiers trying to get jobs when they returned; reclaiming rubber from army boots, including used boots covered in trench mud; recycling rubber from inner tubes; more description of the rubber making process; the amount of expertise needed for the job; playing and coaching soccer; football in Toronto; a game between the Toronto Scottish and Bethlehem Steel; the population of Toronto; little change in postwar Toronto; his losing his job because the man he replaced had come back from the war and took his old job back; his going to work on a dairy farm; his views on labour unrest; men who evaded military service; and his firing a worker.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~4. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.~5. During the interview the interviewee confuses events of World War One and World War Two during a discussion of his work at a dairy farm.
