Unedited interview of actor Gordon Pinsent about his experiences working in live television for the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television; having worked in Winnipeg on the stage and TV before going to the CBC in Toronto; auditions; his first television appearances; progressing to speaking parts; memorable scripts; other actors such as Barry Morse and Jack Creley; rehearsals; forgetting his lines; Brian McDonald, who later became a choreographer, forgetting to pick up his prop gun before a scene with Pinsent; acting in THE FOREST RANGERS, MR. MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT and QUENTIN DURGENS, M.P.; mishaps during live TV shows; problems with trying to use animals in shows; praise for the skill of the Toronto technicians; the excitement of working in live TV; Robert Goulet; Norman Campbell; John Vernon; Christopher Wiggins; David Gardner; Lloyd Bochner; the Bernard Slade play A VERY CLOSE FAMILY; THE WILLOW CIRCLE; the CBC’s Sumach Street rehearsal studios; more on auditions; costume changes; CBC drama series; how the CBC gave actors good training, which stood them in good stead when they went to the U.S. to work; TV acting as a challenge for actors trained on the stage; the energy people felt when they were doing live TV; his view that the performances on live TV were probably not the best because they were overwrought; memorable moments from the early days of live TV; and being part of a community of performers. <44mn 28s>
