Unedited interview of actor and writer Don Harron about his experiences working in live television for the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television when he was in England; actors forgetting lines; working on THE BIG REVUE; the source of the sweater and cap worn by his character Charlie Farquharson, which he created in 1952; colleagues such as Larry Mann and Patricia Joudry; Joudry writing a sketch for Harron and Toby Robbins on THE BIG REVUE; appearing in the comedy revue SPRING THAW; more about the inspiration for his character Charlie Farquharson; working long days; his work in radio; writing scripts; the nerve-wracking nature of being on live television; the sponsors; producer Don Hudson; other people who worked on THE BIG REVUE: the loss of a number of kinescopes of early CBC television productions; writing a script for a musical version of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES for Norman Campbell; John Drainie and Toby Tarnow in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES; the use of puppets in low-budget productions such as SUNSHINE SKETCHES; the role of theatre actors in making television work; the versatility of actors trained on the stage; the calm professionalism of the production crews; acting in the Bernard Slade play THE PRIZE WINNER, during which the audio signal was lost; getting a lot of roles one year; getting a wide range of roles; his writing lyrics for ANNE OF GREEN GABLES while he was working in New York and sending them to Norman Campbell in Toronto; other writing projects; the success of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES as a long-running stage production; other plays he was in, such as THE QUEEN AND HER REBELS, A PHOENIX TOO FREQUENT, REDDICK and REDDICK II, and WICKED WOMAN, the lack of sufficient rehearsal time; the talent of the performers and production crews in the early days of television; censorship of jokes he did on the U.S. comedy series HEE HAW; kinescopes of productions such as SUNSHINE SKETCHES and how they look cheap but still wonderful; his memories of Robert Goulet, Shirley Harmer, Jack Duffy, Alfie Scopp and Mavor Moore; the freedom of live television; the invention of the Charlie Farquharson character in 1952; his start in radio with the CRBC; and working at age 10 drawing cartoons for audiences on the banquet circuit. <53mn 12s>
