Interview of Jill Foster (real name Frances Hancock), about her experiences working in live television at the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how she started working in television; working for Frank Peppiatt and John Aylesworth on their comedy show named AFTER HOURS, the show host Rick Campbell; the feeling that they did not know what they were doing; the looseness of the show; her experience as a stage actress; being expected to sing even though she did not want to; mishaps during the show; an accident in which John Aylesworth was injuring during a rehearsal when Frank Peppiatt hit him on the head with a platter cover that had a sharp point inside it; other shows she did, such as HERE’S DUFFY; Jack Duffy; Billy Van; the fun she had doing comedy shows; her switch to acting in dramas; the drama LOST IN A CROWD; good and bad scripts; problems with scripts by Canadian writers, many of whom came out of radio; a Paul Almond production of MACBETH; rehearsals; nervousness of the actors; a play written by her husband Bernard Slade and directed by Harvey Hart, entitled A VERY CLOSE FAMILY, which was modelled upon her own family and in which she played the daughter; other roles she had in television plays; her gratitude just to be working; socializing with other actors; the failure of the CBC to give performers enough recognition; the sense that everyone was feeling his or her way in the early days of television; the freedom of working in live television; and her husband’s talent. <49m 44s>

There are colour bars at approximately 30 minutes into the show and the end of the interview is followed by about 4 seconds of colour bars, black and then tape in high-speed reverse to approximately the 61-minute mark
