Unedited interview of actor Ted Follows about his experiences working in live television on the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television for the British Broadcasting Corporation in London; CBC’s Sumach Street studios; his first live telecast; the value of having experience as a stage actor; the relatively small pool of actors in Toronto in the 1950s and 1960s; rehearsals; the interest by the actors in the TV performances of their fellow actors; director George McGowan; learning not to speak too loudly when acting on TV; shows he did such as THE VIRTUOUS ISLAND; John Colicos; working with props; a sword fight scene with Sean Connery in a Paul Almond production of MacBeth; his having to be helped over a wall by another actor during REHEARSAL FOR INVASION; timing and the need to speed up or slow down to finish on time for commercial inserts and the end of the show; the nervousness of some actors during live television broadcasts; the golden age of television; the calibre of the directors and the scripts; praise for script writers such as Charles Cohen and Bernard Slade; praise for the production crews; his television series MCQUEEN, which was not done live; praise for the production crews; his favourite roles such as a Nova Scotia fisherman and as a soldier in REHEARSAL FOR INVASION; mishaps such as camera malfunctions; being seen coast to coast whereas stage actors had to go on tour to get such large audiences; and the filmed series WOJECK and its popularity among Canadian audiences. <31mn 22s>
