Unedited interview of singer and actor Jack Duffy about his experiences working in live television at CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television, working on Billy O’Connor’s show; Juliette; O’Connor’s tendency to forget lyrics; singer George Murray forgetting lyrics; working on SHOWTIME; Gloria Lambert; the excitement of working in live television; a sense of family among the performers; a mishap on THE BARRIS BEAT when a stagehand walked by a window, spoiling a scene in which Duffy was supposed to be jumping out of a skyscraper window; his show HERE’S DUFFY; working with Larry Mann; the need for quick costume changes; his recollections of some funny sketches he was in; Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster; asking for a raise; Jack Kane; CBC’s Sumach Street studios; his work in U.S. television on shows such as Perry Como’s; the lack of a star system in Canada the feeling by Canadian performers and audiences that Canadian television was second best; live television as a good learning process; the importance of rehearsals; working with people he admired, such as Alex Barris; the warm response of the audience when he sang his show’s theme song It All Depends on You. <24mn 22s>
