Unedited interview of producer-director Norman Campbell about his experiences working in live television at the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television; his having worked in radio for four years in Vancouver by the time TV started in Canada; a commercial show he did on CBC for the sponsor Nabob; knowing nothing about television when he arrived in Toronto, apart from having seen it; Terry Dale; Wally Koster; his writing a show called THE EAGER BEAVER; a television course given by Rudy Bretz, who created a cardboard box called the Bretz box, which a director could look through during rehearsal to see what a 2-inch lens would show and what a 3-inch lens would show; the need for choreographers to adjust to the V-shape a television camera would show; backlighting; the LET’S SEE show with Percy Saltzman and the puppet Uncle Chichimus; producer Franz Kraemer appearing as a waiter on the Uncle Chichimus show; THE BIG REVUE; SHOWTIME; Harvey Hart; Denny Vaughan; Joan Fairfax; SUNSHINE TOWN; highlights of some of Campbell’s other productions; working with set designers; Tyrone Guthrie and HMS PINAFORE; having to redo the first act of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE because a technician did not get the kinescope recording due to a power failure; rehearsals; ANNE OF GREEN GABLES with Toby Tarnow and John Drainie; using dry ice; making sure that the live TV shows fit their time slot, rather than being too fast or too slow; performers such as singers Billy O’Connor and George Murray forgetting their lines; challenges of producing big productions such as ballets; rehearsals; THE BIG DIG by Eric Nicols; his television production of the Stratford Festival production THE GONDOLIERS; THE MIKADO; a cat running away during a scene when Robert Goulet is singing a song; auditions; SHOW OF THE WEEK; working with Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster; Dorothy Collins; the camaraderie of performers and production staff; and live television as the golden age of television because shows were put together rather than assembled from various pieces. <1h 21mn 7s>

Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-05-10.~4. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-05-11.~5. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~6. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~7. Norman Campbell died on 12 April 2004.~8. Tom Harvey interview is also on one of the tapes.
