Unedited interview of actor Lloyd Bochner about his experiences working in live television for the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television; his first experiences working on TV in Canada; his having done a lot of work with Mavor Moore on the stage; being called by Mavor Moore to act in the CBC television presentation ROPE; rehearsing in a CBC building in Toronto and trying to avoid running into the wooden floor-to-ceiling posts; the advantages stage actors had over some of the radio actors when it came to acting in television dramas; the lack of professional theatre in Canada; his experience in theatre from the time he was 11 years old; television as a very personal medium; the need to tone down stage acting to suit television; the lack of preparation time; the anxiety of being on live television; Kate Reid fainting during the dress rehearsal for HAMLET but being revived in time for the live broadcast; a camera malfunctioning just before a broadcast of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST; adapting classic plays for television; praise for the young actors, directors and writers in the early days of CBC television, some of whom came from CBC radio; the early days of television as a time of learning, with opportunities to perform different kinds of roles; taking chances because the medium was new and full of promise; his awareness that he was one of the fortunate few offered leading roles; the sense that the actors were all in it together; an incident in which he was in a scene with Barry Morse pretending to drink champagne which was really ginger ale covered in fruit flies; being in a scene in SOCRATES in which Larry Mann hands him an octopus; the production of THE QUEEN OF SPADES in which actress Mary Savage, in an open coffin, was flickering her eyelids as he approached and sat up in the coffin because she did not knowshe was still on camera; his various roles; doing THE PORTRAIT OF DORIAN GRAY with director David Greene; the resentment Canadian actors felt when some CBC drama directors gave roles to foreign actors such as Jack Klugman, who were not yet stars but still considered an advantage to directors who wanted to use the plays as demos to get work outside Canada; his work in THE DUCHESS OF MALFI directed by Mario Prizek; and the sense that early television drama was like repertory theatre with the actors all in it together, without agents or publicists, and without jockeying for position or trying for stardom. <40mn 45s>

Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-06-12.~4. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-06-17.~5. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~6. There are colour bars approximately 30 minutes into the tape, and a bit of audio during the concluding colour bars.~7. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~8. Lloyd Bochner died on 29 October 2005 at age 81.
