Unedited interview of television writer and producer John Aylesworth about his experiences working in live television at the CBC. The interview is for a two-hour documentary entitled LIVE TO AIR, broadcast on CBC television on 16 September 2002. Among the subjects discussed are: how he started working in television; working as a copywriter with Frank Peppiatt at MacLaren Advertising; being hired by the CBC’s Peter McFarlane, a former MacLaren employee, to do a comedy show, AFTER HOURS; working with Jill Foster; writing the show and performing in it; being on THE BIG REVUE; getting their own show, ON STAGE, which was produced by Norman Jewison; writer Reuben Ship; a skit on AFTER HOURS spoofing the syndicated U.S. show MY FAVOURITE STORY, in which Aylesworth’s head was shown as if it was on a serving platter, actor Larry Mann put the lid down during rehearsal and a wingnut inside the lid hit Aylesworth on the head, knocking him out; other mishaps on the show; favourite skits on the show; the CBC not allowing performers to use cue cards on live television; his forgetting the lyrics in the Social Director skit; working with singer Wally Koster; working with Koster on CROSS CANADA HIT PARADE; tenor George Murray not being able to memorize lyrics; having to devise new skits to illustrate songs that were repeated on CROSS CANADA HIT PARADE week after week, such as Green Door; writing for CROSS CANADA HIT PARADE with Bernard Slade; working with orchestra leader Jack Kane; ways to make the orchestra look interesting on television; singer Joyce Hahn and announcer Austin Willis on CROSS CANADA HIT PARADE; working on THE BIG REVUE; THE BIG REVUE producer Don Hudson; a comedy sketch about Toronto streetcars; the disappearance of variety shows from television; and the adrenalin and creative freedom of live television in the early days of television.<43mn 54s>

1. This is a Betacam SX dub of originals shot on Betacam SP tapes 3 and 4 (there are colour bars at approximately 30 minutes into this dub)~2. The Canadian Broadcast Museum holds the Betacam SP originals.~3. Production date of the Betacam originals (date interview conducted) is 2002-06-05.~4. Betacam SX tape dubbed at CBC on 2002-06-10.~5. Some replies are rephrased at the request of the interviewer in order to create complete replies since the interviewer’s questions are edited out for the documentary.~6. Videotape and transcript available for consultation on LAC premises.~7. John Aylesworth went on to a career in American television, with such credits as co-creator and executive producer with fellow Canadian Frank Peppiatt of the 1969-1992 series HEE HAW, co-executive producer with Peppiatt of the 1974-1976 series THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS POPCORN MACHINE, and co-producer with Peppiatt of the 1977-1978 CBS series SHIELDS AND YARNELL. ~8.
