"Canada's Northern Islands are the object of watchful care by the Dominion Government. In the summer of 1922 an expedition was sent into these arctic regions for the purpose of surveys, scientific research, and the establishment of police posts, customs houses and post offices at various points. This film, the first in a series, deals with the voyage from Quebec to Baffin Island."~A map outlines the route from Quebec City to Baffin Island through Pond Inlet. "The expedition was organized by the Federal Department of the Interior through its North West Territories Branch. J.D. Craig, M.E.I.C., D.L.S., engineer to the International Boundary Commission, was officer in charge." A close up of J.D. Craig.~"The vessel was in command of Captain J.E. Bernier, of Quebec, famous arctic navigator and explorer." Close up of Captain Bernier.~"The Expedition set sail from Quebec on July 18th." Series of shots as the ship is towed out to sea to begin its voyage north."~"Included in the party was a detachment of the 'Royal Mounted', bound for our frontiers of the North to administer the law throughout this vast land of unknown possibilities."~Shot of the RCMP detachment posing for the camera.~"To avoid the pack ice the vessel's course followed closely the Greenland coast to a point about half-way between Disko Island and Devil's Thumb, then swung sharply westward..." An animated map illustrates the path of the vessel.~"On August 8th the pack ice was sighted." Ship making its way through ice. A short shot of several RCMP officers holding up a large polar bear hide for the camera.~"On August 15th the 'Arctic' entered Pond Inlet, the Expedition's first point of call."~A map shows the ship's course. An Aboriginal (Inuit) "welcoming party" boards the ship, one of which is wearing a balmoral. Close ups of their faces.~"Shortly after the ship's arrival at Pond Inlet, the 'Mountie' who had been on duty there for the past year, reported to the RCMP officer."
