This is about the project to improve rail transportation in the Rogers Pass by building two new tunnels, a surface route and a ventilation shaft. The film begins with a discussion of the importance of rail transportation of goods to Western Canada and from there to Pacific Rim countries. This is important to promote the economic growth of Western Canada. Exports of natural resources depend on efficient transportation. CP Rail is a key element in this trade and hence in Canada's participation in global trade. Grain, potash, petrochemicals and sulphur are major exports. Various CP employees explain how CP Rail provides efficient transport of such goods through such means as its 111-car unit trains for carrying coal. Also discussed are impediments to efficient transport of goods, notably the Crowsnest Pass fixed freight rates that failed to cover the costs of the railways but were raised in 1983, and the bottleneck created between Calgary and Vancouver because of problems with the Rogers Pass. Omer Lavallee, Canadian Pacific's corporate historian and archivist, shows a model of the Bear Creek Valley and other terrain in the vicinity of the Rogers Pass and describes some of the history of the Pass, problems such as the danger of avalanches and the completion of the Connaught Tunnel in 1916 which enabled trains to bypass the dangerous route over the pass. The Rogers Pass project is now underway and is the largest CP Rail project since the construction of the transcontinental railway. <24mn>
