The Allan E. Gotlieb fonds consists of handwritten diaries, daytimers, speeches, speech notes and talking points, event programs, incoming and outgoing correspondence, incoming and outgoing memoranda, briefing notes, reports, press releases, clippings, guest lists and a guest book, audiovisual cassettes and photographs related to Mr. Gotlieb's years as Canadian Ambassador to the United States from 1981 to 1989. The material documents the meetings and events related to the issues occupying Canada-US relations at the time, including events and receptions hosted and attended by Ambassador and Mrs. Gotlieb. The records relate to political campaigns and elections, economic and political agendas of Canada and the US, trade negotiations and legislation, imports and exports, electricity and natural gas, acid rain, immigration reform legislation, and state visits. The documents were used by Mr. Gotlieb to write his memoir The Washington diaries, 1981-1989 (2006). The fonds includes the final draft of this publication.

The fonds also consists of a small amount of material related to Mr. Gotlieb's years as Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs.

Gotlieb, Allan, 1928-2020 : Allan E. Gotlieb was born in Winnipeg in 1928. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Berkeley in 1949. Mr. Gotlieb went on to study at Harvard and his LLB in 1954. Later Mr. Gotlieb received an MA and BCL at Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar.

Mr. Gotlieb joined the Department of External Affairs in 1957. Mr. Gotlieb worked his way up in the federal government, becoming Assistant Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs in 1967, Deputy Minister of Communications in 1968, Deputy Minister of Manpower and Immigration in 1973, and Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs in 1977. In 1981, P.E. Trudeau appointed Mr. Gotlieb Canadian Ambassador to the United States. He held this position until 1989. His appointment was maintained after the election of PM Brian Mulroney in 1984.

Mr Gotlieb has taught at several universities including Harvard and the University of Toronto. He has served as the Director of various international corporations in Canada and Canadian crown corporations. Mr. Gotlieb has also served as chairman and/or advisor on the boards of several charitable foundations. Mr. Gotlieb previously worked as Senior Advisor in the law firm of Stikeman Elliott and currently is Senior Advisor in the law firm of Bennett Jones.

Mr. Gotlieb is the former publisher of Saturday Night Magazine. He is the author of
Disarmament and international law: a study of the role of law in the disarmament process (1965), Canadian treaty-making (1968), The impact of technology on the development of contemporary international law (1981), I'll be with you in a minute, Mr. Ambassador: the education of a Canadian diplomat in Washington (1991) and The Washington diaries, 1981-1989 (2006).

Mr. Gotlieb was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1987.

Allan Gotlieb married Sondra Gotlieb (nee Kaufman) in 1955. Sondra Gotlieb is a well-known Canadian journalist and author.
