Series documents decisions made within the Office of the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Board of Directors, senior executives, management committees, shareholders and owners within the predecessor companies and documents the predecessor companies' activities in the production, marketing and selling of coal. Series includes the records of coal and related industry companies preceding the establishment of the Cape Breton Development Corporation including Acadia Coal Company, Eastern Car Company Ltd., Cumberland Railway and Coal Company, Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company (Scotia), Dominion Iron and Steel Company (Disco), Dominion Coal Company Ltd. (Domco), and Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation (Dosco).

Series consists of cash books, balance sheets, waste books, coal sales accounts, stock accounts, a pay book, colliery time books, slack ledgers, labour analysis, various company appraisals, pension and benefit plan reports, contracts, lease agreements (non-land), and correspondence. Also included are employee and payroll cards detailing demographic information of predecessor companies' labour force.

Series includes Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation annual reports of compensable accidents in the coal division for the years 1934 -1967 and accident reports of various companies, 1881-1960.

Series also includes Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation summaries of departments and units of the Sydney Steel Plant, production data, and labour rates, company descriptions of mines and mills (features, construction, and products), a summary of coal production in Nova Scotia organized by date for Dominion Coal Company, Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co., Cumberland Railway and Coal Co., Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, and various independent companies as well as company operations recommendation reports for Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation.
