Series consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, grey literature, publications, and clippings documenting MacDonald's involvement as a youth with various United Church and ecumenical organizations, his studies at Pine Hill Divinity Hall in Halifax, and his early career as a United Church minister in Prince Edward Island. Among the main activities documented in the records are his presidency of the Maritime Conference (1957-1959) and then the National Council (1958-1960) of the Young People's Union of the United Church, his role as a director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, his interest in Christian broadcasting, and his activities as a student prison chaplain. There is also an extensive block of files consisting of his lecture notes from Pine Hill. The later files in the series, dating from the 1961-1965 period, as MacDonald became more concerned with issues relating to social justice, rural development, regional disparities, and related concerns, shed light on his political evolution and his decision to run for Parliament.
