Speeches given in the West Block of the Parliament Buildings, Ottawa by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and other people on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition «Serving Democracy: Beyond the Ballot Box» shown at the Bank of Canada with the collaboration of the National Archives of Canada, for the 75th anniversary of Elections Canada. Speeches given by various people: Jean-Pierre Kingsley, General Director of Elections Canada, who hosts this event, about Elections Canada, the role of General Director, its impartiality, and its importance for democracy ; Gordon Thiessen, Governor of the Bank of Canada; Anne Rolland, Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada; Françoise Houle, Director General at the National Archives of Canada; Marianne Scott, National Librarian of Canada on the participation of the National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada; and Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, on democracy, the elections, and the role of Canada in promoting democracy around the world. Followed by a re-enactment of an electoral debate by Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Robert Borden, a ribbon cutting ceremony, the signing of a guest book, and sound of the crowd’s chatter. <60mn>
