Fonds consists of Gerald Walter Russell's unpublished letters to members of his family beginning in 1865 when Russell was a naval cadet. They continue through Russell's service in many parts of the world, including Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manchuria. These letters come from several different vessels on which Russell served until 1875. The letters continue in 1876 and 1877 when Russell sailed the North West Atlantic from the Bahamas to Labrador on the HMS PERT. Russell served as a junior officer on the PERT and the content of these letters is mostly personal in nature. They include description of the fisheries and of communities in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec and of a trip to Niagara Falls. Several additional letters from the Suez Canal in 1882 and Malta in 1896 and undated from Bombay are also held.
