Captain H.O. Crawley, Royal Engineer, was employed by the Governor of New Brunswick to survey a line between the Cumberland Basin, at the head of the Bay of Fundy, to Baie Verte on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1843, he submitted two reports to the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick in which he considered the plan to be feasible, but impracticable.

This map was produced as a direct result of Crawley's role as a member of the Corps of Royal Engineers. The map was drawn by Crawley in 1842 and published by John Weale in 1845. It depicts the principal geographic features of the Tantramar marsh, the Floating Morass and the geography of the Cumberland Basin westward to the edge of Baie Verte.
