Oswald, Gwendoline Constance : Gwendoline Constance Oswald was a student of Canadian studies.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carlton University in 1955 and continued to take post-graduate courses. In 1962, she completed a translation of Antoine Gérin-Lajoie's novel Jean Rivard. In creating her translation, Oswald hoped to encourage more widespread engagement with Canadian studies but the book was never published. In 1978, she published a children's fiction novel, A Young Explorer from Brittany: a Boy's Visit to "New France" A.D. 1535.

Gérin-Lajoie, Antoine, 1824-1882 : Antoine Gérin-Lajoie was a French Canadian lawyer, journalist, and a curator at the Library of Parliament who lived from August 4, 1824 - August 7, 1882. He is best known for his creative works including his novel, Jean Rivard, which was originally published in two parts in 1862 and 1864.

Gwendoline Constance Oswald began her translation in 1958, following post-graduate courses at Carleton University. According to Oswald, Gérin-Lajoie's purpose was explore the life and times of early settlers in 19th century Quebec and to encourage agriculture as a profession. Each chapter was hand-written, studied, and then typed on her own typewriter; Oswald created her own footnotes and included references to other publications. In her translation, she attempted to adhere to the 19th century language style as closely as possible. She created a typed manuscript, which she submitted to a publishing company for consideration, and one typed copy. The typed copy of the manuscript was donated to National Library in 1979, via Carleton University. Prior to this, Oswald donated Xerox copies of the text to several universities: the University of Winnipeg Library and Sir George Williams University (Concordia) Montreal in 1970-71; and the Institute of Canadian Studies at Carleton University in 1964.
