Rorke, Louise Richardson, 1878-1949 : Writer of books for children, Louise Richardson Rorke [pseudonym Claude R. Vane] was born in Thornbury, Ontario in 1878. She earned a teaching certificate at the Ontario Normal College in Hamilton and, after gaining some experience in Norwich, Ontario (1899-1907), she returned to her home town where she eventually became principal of her old school. In addition to her presidency of Pickering's Women's Club, membership in the Women's Institute, and teaching of Sunday School at the United Church, she edited the magazine of Canadian Quakers, "The Canadian Friend," from 1936-1949, and held an editorial position on the "Canadian Teacher" from 1910 to 1945. Writing under the pseudonym "Claude R. Vane," she won the Canadian Women's Press Club (CWPC) prize (Toronto branch) for the best short story in 1931. She retired in 1933 and lived at a summer cottage with her sister, Jessie, in Pickering, Ontario, where she produced three more novels and a volume of verse before ill health led to her death on July 23, 1949. A collection of her stories was posthumously released in 2000.
