Contained here is a bound copy of Pioneer reminiscences of Thos. P. Wicks, British Columbia Coast, 1882: an autobiography of pioneer life amonst the Indians of Northern Vancouver Island. Covers are missing. Flyleaf contains name A.G. Baker, D.P. "Statement written down by K.A. Waites to dictation of Thos. P. Wicks, 22nd Dec. 1939, at my request, J.S. Matthews" (from Introduction). Photographs are annotated by J. S. Matthews. Pages 1-13 contains a sepereately-titeld work: The story of Alex-see of Suquash, B.C., Mohican-Iroquis [sic], Indian. Mary, his wife, and Alex, his son; A narrative of an early nineteenth century journey by canoe and on foot from Montreal to Astoria and ultimate settlement at Suquash, B.C.; As recorded by Thos. P. Wicks, who heard it from the lips of Alex-see at the pioneer home of Ned Fregonne, an early settler of Northern British Columbia Coast.

Wicks, Thomas Prentis, 1868-1949 : Thomas P. Wicks, also known as Skookum Tom, went to Black Sand Beach, Vancouver Island, in 1882 to prospect for flake gold. Unsuccessful at prospecting, he moved to Balaclava Island and later to Alert Bay, B.C., where he worked on occasion as lumberman and fur trader.
