Grier, Eldon, 1917-2001 : Eldon Grier was born in London, England to Canadian parents in 1917. He was raised in Montreal and educated in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. He began his professional career as a painter. In 1945 he studied fresco painting under Alfredo Zalce in Mexico City and was later apprenticed to Diego Rivera as a plasterer. When he returned to Montreal, he became a teacher under Arthur Lismer at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where he taught drawing, mural painting and print-making techniques (1946-1951). He married painter Sylvia Tait in 1953, and turned his artistic focus to writing poetry in 1954. Between 1955 and 1965, Grier travelled extensively in Europe. He moved to Vancouver in 1968. In 1997 Grier was made a life member of the League of Canadian Poets. He died in July 2001.
