The fonds consists of archival material produced and used to write the book entitled "Envoys Extraordinary: Women of the Canadian Foreign Service" published by Dundurn Press Limited, Toronto, in 1995. Some Canadian women, past and present, have helped formulate and implement Canada's foreign policy. The boxes contain their remarkable stories who, against the odds, carved out careers as officers in the Canadian Foreign Service. There are correspondence, biographical notes from women, early drafts of the manuscript "Against the Odds" which became "Envoys Extraordinary: Women of the Canadian Foreign Service", transcripts of interviews which include annotations and comments of women interviewed, and 22 audiocassettes of original interviews conducted by Margaret Weiers. These interviews were recorded by Mrs. Weiers during the research phase of her book. Weiers, Margaret, 1928-2018 : Born on 29 November 1928, Margaret Weiers was educated at the University of Saskatchewan (BA, English) in 1949. She practiced journalism in Regina as radio copywriter and newspaper reporter between 1949 and 1955. She entered in the foreign service as officer in 1955 and she continued that work until 1957. Mrs Weiers was Vice-Consul for the Canadian Consulate General in New York and Press Officer for the Canadian Delegation to the United Nations during nearly all of that period. From 1959 to 1960, she was appointed Script Editor for CBC Radio in Toronto. She moved to Ghana in 1960 for fifteen months. Margaret Weiers came back to Canada and became a reporter, feature writer and member of the editorial board of the Toronto Star from 1963 to 1991. She published a book entitled "Envoys Extraordinary: Women of the Canadian Foreign Service" edited by Dundurn Press Limited, Toronto in 1995. During her career, she received the Canadian Women's Press Club Memorial Award for the best story in 1969 and, in 1979, she was the first journalist to receive a special award from the American Association on Mental Deficiency for the citation called "Socially Responsible Journalism".
