Butler, W. F. (William Francis), Sir, 1838-1910 : Sir William Francis Butler was born in Ireland. He joined the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot in 1856 and served in India and Burma, reaching the rank of Lieutenant in 1863. Following his regiment's return to England in 1864, Butler was stationed at Brantford, Ontario as part of the strengthening of defences against the Fenians in 1867. He returned to Canada in 1870 upon hearing of Colonel Wolseley's expedition to the Red River, and performed advance reconnaisance work. In October of that year he undertook a wide-ranging exploratory journey through the North West and reported to the Lieutenant-Governor on the conditions he found there. His account of this journey was later published as The Great Lone Land (London, 1872). Butler fought with Wolseley again in the Ashanti campaign in West Africa, and served as Commander-in-Chief of the British force in South Africa. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant-General.
