One of a group of original cartoon drawings executed for Laurentian Publishing Ltd. publications "Northern Life" and "Northern Ontario Business," ca. 1980-1987. Some were likely produced for the "Sudbury Star." This cartoon depicts a Soviet leader crushing a miniature aircraft marked '007' in his right hand. As he does this people fall like toys from the damaged aircraft. The image refers to the 'accidental' shooting down of Korean Air Flight 007, also known as KE007, a Korean Air commercial civilian airliner, shot down by Soviet jet interceptors, just west of Sakhalin island (during an inadvertent violation of Soviet airspace) on September 1, 1983. All 269 passengers (including U.S. Congressman Lawrence McDonald) and crew perished.
