This sub-series documents the academic and intellectual work of Ed Broadbent mostly between 1996 and his return to politics in 1994. During that period, he was a scholar successively at Oxford, Simon Fraser, Queen's and McGill universities. It contains reading notes used in seminars and lectures, speeches, general readings and manuscript drafts and correspondence with editors and authors relating to the publication of articles in journals and newspapers, and the publication of chapters in edited books.

The documents from this sub-series deals with the direction of socialist thinking and the place of political parties from the Left in Canada and in the World in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ed Broadbent was also concerned with the globalization of the world economy. In particular, this sub-series reveals his interest in the study of the social responsibility of corporations from the leading industrial countries towards the political, economic and social rights of workers in developing countries.
