The series consists of the records of the Aid to Scholarly Publications Programme; a programme which coordinates the adjudication of scholarly monographs submitted for grants in aid of publication through a peer review process. It holds files for manuscripts that were approved by the Aid to Scholarly Publications Committee and paid a subsidy, as well as files for manuscripts that the committee rejected, deemed ineligible, or recommended for revision and re-submission at a later date. A few files are for manuscripts that were closed by the applicant or became inactive. The manuscript files generally contain the readers' reports, the authors' replies to these reports, the decisions of the committee, and correspondence with authors, publishers, and readers. The decisions and reports provide evidence of the evolving direction of scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. The manuscripts themselves are not found in the files.

In addition to the manuscript files, there is a small amount of administrative material pertaining to the operation of the programme, the meetings of its management board, and book prizes.
