The records of this sub-series concern areas of interest to the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce over a period of nearly 10 years, and were created by four consecutive ministers. The Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce (a product of the April 1969 merger of the Department of Industry and the Department of Trade and Commerce) was first presided by Jean-Luc Pépin from April 1, 1969, to November 26, 1972, then by Alastair Gillespie from November 27, 1972, to September 25, 1975, and then by Donald Campbell Jamieson from September 26, 1975, to September 13, 1976. Lastly, the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien was Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce from September 14, 1976, to September 15, 1977. A large portion of these records therefore predates his appointment to the head of this Department.

This sub-series consists mainly of correspondence addressed to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce, but also includes working papers, memos, and general briefing materials.

This correspondence is classified in numerical order.

Files beginning with "1" concern the Department's management and administration.

Files beginning with "3" contain correspondence exchanged with other federal departments and agencies.

Files beginning with "6" contain correspondence regarding programs, activities and economic missions of the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. They also contain general queries, employment applications, and requests for meetings with the Minister.

Files beginning with "7" contain correspondence exchanged with M.P.s and Senators.

Files beginning with "8" concern federal-provincial relations on specific issues.

Files beginning with "10" are correspondence with international bodies.

Files beginning with "11" contain correspondence with associations.

The sub-series ends with the correspondence date files (or correspondence logs) of Edward S. Goldenberg and Minister Jean Chrétien.
