Since 1998, Lisa Klapstock has focused her photo-based production on the back alleys of downtown Toronto. These overlooked environments are a no man's land. Rarely known to strangers they are used for back garden access, parking, storage and stray dogs. These alleys are nevertheless imprinted with the traces of human presence and activities. By focussing on these places, Klapstock brings them to light. She documents the hidden life of the back lanes, offering a different view of urban Toronto and its inhabitants. Her laneway explorations led her to the project Living Room, a series of large-scale photographs, where Klapstock records her interventions in these clandestine environments. She photographs herself, clad in white coveralls sitting somewhat stiffly on abandoned pieces of furniture. The chairs and sofas which are often missing legs, become props in what could be described as a theatre-like setting consisting of garage doors, buildings in various states of disrepair, makeshift fences, overgrown weeds, signs and graffiti.
