Company of Young Canadians : The Company of Young Canadians (CYC) was created as a government corporation in 1966 under the Company of Young Canadians Act (14-15-16 Elizabeth II, Ch. 36, S.C. 1966-1967) to encourage programs for social, economic, and community development in Canada by voluntary service. Funded through the Privy Council Office in its initial year of operation, the CYC later received its funding from, and reported to Parliament through, the Secretary of State.

The CYC recruited young Canadians, provided training, and then sent them out to work in community programs throughout Canada. Through these field workers, community volunteers were organized to foster development strategies, and to encourage people to participate in decisions that affected their lives. Development projects included those pertaining to Native and Inuit groups, co-operatives, urban renewal, handicrafts, agriculture, day-care, recreation and culture, medical clinics, women's groups, immigrants, social welfare, education, and tourism.

The Company was granted a considerable amount of autonomy at the time of its creation. In 1969, as a result of a number of controversies, the CYC lost much of this autonomy. From that time onward, the Company's governing council was appointed by the Governor in Council, rather than by the CYC. Although the CYC expanded the number of projects it oversaw in 1973-1974, the Company of Young Canadians Act was repealed in 1976 under the Government Expenditure Restraint Act (Elizabeth II, Ch. 3, S.C. 1976-1977) as part of a federal government initiative to reduce expenditures. The CYC officially disbanded on 31 March 1977.
