Raffi, 1948- : Né en 1948 au Caïre (Égypte) de parents d'origine arménienne, Raffi Cavoukian s'installe avec sa famille au Canada en 1958. Guitariste, chanteur et auteur compositeur, Raffi fait ses débuts sur la scène de musique folklorique de Toronto dans la première moitié des années 1970 et commence à donner des spectacles pour enfants en 1974. Raffi lance en 1975 son premier disque commercial Good Luck Boy, qui est destiné aux adultes. Ce disque est suivi l'année suivante par le premier d'une longue série de disques pour enfants, intitulé Singable Songs for the Very Young. Au début, Raffi donne ses spectacles dans les écoles et bibliothèques de l'Ontario et ensuite dans les salles de concert vers la fin des années 1970. Depuis 1979, Raffi se concentre sur la musique pour enfants. Avec les premiers spectacles aux États Unis en 1981 et en 1982, la carrière de Raffi prend son envol international. Vers le milieu des années 1980, Raffi est d'ailleurs l'un des principaux artistes de spectacles pour enfants aux États Unis et au Canada. Plus de 14 millions d'exemplaires des enregistrements de l'artiste (disques et vidéos des spectacles) ont été vendus en Amérique du Nord. Raffi met sa carrière musicale en veilleuse de 1989 à 1994 pour se consacrer à l'éco-activisme. Un pionnier de la défense des droits et du bien être des enfants, Raffi élabore une philosophie axée sur le respect des enfants (« child honouring »), une approche qu'il met en pratique dans sa musique, sa participation à l'industrie musicale et ses autres activités. Raffi refuse toute commandite commerciale et soutient que les enfants ne devraient pas être ciblés par la publicité. En plus des recueils de chansons et des livres illustrés basés sur des chansons (plus de trois millions d'exemplaires vendus), Raffi est l'auteur d'autres publications, notamment son autobiographie, The Life of a Children's Troubadour (1999) et, en collaboration avec Sharna Olfman, il dirige la rédaction de l'anthologie Child Honouring : How to Turn This World Around (2006). Raffi est président de sa maison de disques, Troubadour Music, où il a produit ses disques et ceux d'autres artistes. Parmi les honneurs et les prix accordés à Raffi, mentionnons l'Ordre du Canada (1983), le prix spécial Walt Grealis décerné par l'Académie canadienne des arts et des sciences de l'enregistrement (CARAS, 1990), un prix d'excellence environnementale de l'Organisation des Nations Unies (1992), le prix Hommage de la Société canadienne des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique (SOCAN, 2000), l'Order of British Columbia (2001), des diplômes honorifiques et de nombreux prix de l'industrie de la musique.
